Australian Government Keeps an Eye on Working Holiday Permits

The latest reports by Australian Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) indicate that a large numbers of young travelers are engaging in the practice of deploying fraudulent ways to extend their stay in Australia after their working holiday visas expire. This is done with the help of Australian farmers who sell them falsified documents to support their applications.

DIAC issues working holiday visa to young people coming from countries like Denmark, France, Belgium, Canada, Republic of Korea, Republic of Cyprus, Finland, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Estonia, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Taiwan and UK. Australia has a reciprocal work and holiday visa arrangements with these above mentioned countries.

The validity of this visa is for 12 months. However, if the holder of the visa has worked in Australia for 3 months in any of the industries specified for skills shortage, he will be permitted to get an extension of his visa. This arrangement is prevalent because the manpower requirement for farming in Australia depends much on these applicants.

The case of fraudulency came to light when Australian immigration authorities came across advertisements that offered false documents for extension of working holiday visas on the web. Evidences suggest that farmers charge approx. Aus$400-500 to provide these documents.

Since then, DIAC has cancelled 1059 working holiday visa extension applications. Last year, 6 immigrants have been prosecuted and 5 convicted on the same grounds.

A spokesman of the department of immigration said that the cases have reduced in number as a result of this crack down, and they are welcoming immigrants on fair grounds, and this issue shall not bring any change or reduction in the Australian immigration program.
